The Panama Canal was inaugurated in 1914 by President William Howard Taft, after a ten- year construction period led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Canal has helped Panama become one of the best-connected countries in the world. Last year a little more than 13000 vessels transited the waterway, carrying 518000+ tons covering 180 trade routes and connecting directly with 1920 ports and 170 countries. The Panama Canal represents 6% of waterborne world’s trade and USA represents 72% of its tonnage. In 1977 the United States and Panama negotiated the Carter-Torrijos Treaty that gave Panama the rights of the Panama Canal; the waterway was transferred to Panama’s control on December 31, 1999. Below at left is a photo of the Miraflores locks in the Pacific side of the Canal and the visiting center where the passage of ships can be appreciated.
The Canal reached capacity at the beginning of the XXI century when Panama approved a referendum to expand the Canal. The NeoPanamx locks can transit ships with four times as many containers, the #1 commodity of the canal, than the old locks do. Between the two type of locks the Panama Canal transited 518+ million tons in 2022. The Canal is the main economic engine of Panama and its #1 tourist attraction. Below are photos of the new locks and the size of ships that it can accommodate.
The Canal surroundings is also one of the most attractive areas for housing, highlighting a rich flora and fauna in its natural environment that serves as the watershed of the the Panama Canal.
In 1673, two years after the old city was destroyed by British pirate Henry Morgan, the city was rebuilt in what is known today as “Casco Antiguo” (Old Quarters). The site offered better defenses against attacks. Today it is an eclectic place that mixes history, boutique hotels, beautiful government buildings, museums & exquisite cuisine, recognized by UNESCO as a Creative City of Gastronomy. It has some of the most unique real estate properties perfect for people that love history and living in a colonial environment.
The Old Quarters is renown for the several religious orders that existed in the city. The golden altar (Top right) was hidden from pirates when they ransacked and burned the old city, prompting Spaniards to rebuild the city where the Old Quarters is today, so they could protect and defend the city better.
