Panama and the United States have a relationship of 170 years since the construction of the Panama Railroad in the 1850s. This relationship was strengthened by the construction of the Panama Canal in 1914 and throughout the years the two countries have cooperated on issues of national and international importance. The State of Texas and the Houston region have a special relationship with Panama, being the #1 state and metropolitan region in investment and trade with Panama.
In 2016 Panama made an investment of $5.2 billion to build a third set of locks and widen & deepen the navigation channel of the canal. This expansion has made it possible for LNG exports of Texas to access Asia, main market for this commodity. With four new LNG terminals projected in the next eighteen months, the relationship between Texas and Panama has become even more important and strengthened the “Strategic Partnership”.
PROPANAMA, the Panama government agency responsible for international promotion of the country has joined forces with the Consulate of Panama in Houston and the U.S.-Panama Business Council (USPA) to organize “Panama Week Texas 2020” to be held on March 9-10 of 2020. The two-day event will be focused on sectors in which Texas excels and are important to Panama’ economy. These are: Maritime, energy/oil & gas, infrastructure, aviation, education, trade & investment, life sciences and logistics. High government officials and leaders of the private sector will be available for public discussions and private meetings. Other sectors may be included as interest for them is evidenced. This is the first of three “Panama Week” that will take place at U.S. cities in 2020.
